Hyphenation changed
- Further development
- Editorial notes
Hyphenation is now done automatically by the browser. Only word marks and particularly hyphenation-sensitive words need to be entered into the word substitution memory if required.
Since the beginning of this week, automatic hyphenation via CSS is active for all TYPO3 sites of the TU Dortmund University. This means that hyphenation on our web pages is automatically set by the browser, which is supported by about 90 percent of the browsers used by our website visitors. For the remaining ten percent, words are not hyphenated. This change was necessary because screen readers read out the previously manually set hyphens, which massively limited accessibility.
Dealing with the Word Substitution Store (WES) The (old) WES of the main appearance, whose entries affected all TYPO3 appearances, is now switched off because of the accessibility issue described above. If you have filled your appearance WES with entries, you should proceed as follows: Delete all common terms there and limit the entries to a few selected words whose separation or non-separation is problematic without an entry in the WES, which could be the case, for example, with uncommon, very long, or compound words.
Check appearance word marks Text-based word marks are excluded from automatic hyphenation, so they are not hyphenated at all by default. If you use such a word mark in your German and/or English appearance, please check the display and, if necessary, enter the desired hyphenation in the word replacement memory.
If you use a logo or a graphic word mark (svg), there is no need for you to take any action here.
