SEO meta data

The specifications in the "SEO" tab of the page properties can be used to influence the presentation and findability in the search results of external search engines.

In the "SEO" tab of the page properties, you should enter a separate title for search engines for each page of your website, as well as a description of the content of the respective page. Below the field "Title for search engines" you will see a preview of how your page will be displayed in external search engines (see screenshot).

Why should the fields be filled in?

If the fields are not filled in, you leave the presentation of your page to the external search engine:

  • For the title, the respective page title is used.
  • For the page description, any part of the page content could be used, e. g. page content that is not well suited for presentation in search results.

By specifying a meaningful page title for search engines and a suitable description of the page content, you can therefore not only positively influence the search engine ranking. You additionally influence the presentation of your page in the search results of external search engines.

What should be considered when filling out the two fields?

Title for search engines:

  • You can use a maximum of 57 characters.
  • The title should match the topic of the page.
  • The title should also match the expected search queries of the users, e.g. a suitable title for the current page would be "Deposit SEO meta data for TU Dortmund pages". This includes the topic of the page and considers that users would specifically search for the SEO metadata for TU Dortmund pages.

Description:

  • You can use a maximum of 156 characters.
  • The description should briefly summarize the main content of the page.
  • Analogous to the title for search engines, the description should also consider what users would search for in order to find this page.

Notice:

The description you provide will not always be used in the search results of external search engines. If your description does not match the search queries of the users, external search engines will still use a part of the page that matches the search query and ignore your description.
