Why TYPO3?
Anyone who runs their website in TU Dortmund University's TYPO3 benefits from numerous important advantages that other systems cannot offer to the same extent.
Hosting, creating and operating your TU website is completely free of charge for you.
If you do not have the personnel resources to create or maintain it, you can conclude an individual, fee-based service contract with the ITMC.
In the case of externally operated websites, costs may be incurred for hosting, maintenance, support, care and, if necessary, programming and design services.
All TYPO3 sites are covered by TU Dortmund University's central maintenance contract.
Advantages: Fast response to technical problems, regular upgrades, agency support
Possible disadvantages with external sites: The system is poorly maintained, not maintained at all or only maintained with a fee-based contract.
The TU Dortmund University's TYPO3 system is constantly being further developed. This ranges from upgrading to a new TYPO version, the development of new plug-ins, functions and content elements, design adjustments and accessibility aspects to bug fixes.
In the case of external providers, costs are usually incurred for such further developments or no further development takes place at all.
TYPO3 sites benefit from the following security features:
- Security and system updates
- Rate limit against denial-of-service attacks
- Rights structure (web admin, editor plus, editor)
- Account cleanup
For external websites, it is necessary to check whether security is guaranteed. This usually involves additional costs.
The TYPO3 team offers a comprehensive, free training program for editors, editors plus and web admins. The training courses take place digitally via Zoom. The courses are held in German.
Acute problems can be reported to the ServiceDesk via ticket. For more extensive questions, we offer the TYPO3 Café every Wednesday, which is also held via Zoom.
The framework design of the TU websites is barrier-free. The TYPO3 team is in constant contact with the DoBuS (Competence Center for Digital Accessibility NRW) and has accessibility in mind for all new developments. The template for the accessibility declaration can be easily integrated into the website. If users have any questions about tests or accessibility aspects, they can contact support (service.itmc@tu-dortmund.de), visit the TYPO3 café or find out more in the documentation/demo portal.
In the case of external websites, the legally binding accessibility requirements are often not met or are charged separately.
All TU Dortmund University TYPO3 sites are implemented in the corporate web design. In this way, we ensure that our external presentation is uniform and the recognition value is high. Within the framework design, appearances can use their logo and individual image material, so that an "individual touch" is nevertheless retained.
In the case of external appearances , the corporate design elements either have to be created at considerable expense and effort or they are only reproduced in a rudimentary form, both of which are disadvantageous.
In line with TU Dortmund University's internationalization efforts, as much content as possible should also be offered in English. With the DeepL integration, English texts or pages can be generated in the SingleTree language variant (a navigation tree with bilingual pages) at the touch of a button. The quality of the translations is so good that they can usually be used almost 1:1 after a brief proofreading.
All TYPO3 websites are responsive, i.e. they adapt to the respective screen size. This means they are also easy to use and operate on mobile devices.
The TU Dortmund University's TYPO3 sites provide the ideal technical framework to enable a good search engine ranking.
Page titles and descriptions (preview displayed in search engines) as well as keywords can be entered for each page in the editorial system.
The TYPO3 editorial system is organized in a folder structure and is generally quite intuitive to use. In the training courses, we provide you with extensive knowledge for editorial maintenance and/or web admin tasks.
In addition to the free support, consulting and training services offered by the TYPO3 team, the filling and ongoing maintenance of websites is usually carried out by the respective departments themselves. If you do not have the personnel capacity to set up or permanently maintain the website, you can conclude individual (also temporary), fee-based service contracts with the ITMC, whose employees will then take care of these tasks.
