Gender-appropriate language

Gender: general infomation

TU Dortmund University sees itself as a university of lived and valued diversity. Language shapes perception, thinking and behavior. For this reason, TU Dortmund University recommends that its students and employees strive for inclusive and gender-appropriate language. After all, communication is only successful when the other person feels addressed and - vice versa - is able to express himself or herself appropriately.

The term "gendering" refers to the effort to use inclusive, gender-neutral and understandable language. Gender-equitable language is anchored in the State Equality Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (§4 LGG NRW).

Gender-appropriate English

There are comparable developments in English. In particular, the gender-neutral pronoun usage "they"/"their" in the singular instead of "he/him/his", she/her/her" has proven successful ("The Professor is teaching her students."). Also the salutation "Mx." instead of "Mr./Ms." is already implemented in dictionaries and many companies/institutions.
